Desert scarves, also known as shemaghs or keffiyeh scarves were originally used to protect travelers against overexposure to the blistering sun. Over time, the shemagh scarf became more than travel wear. It evolved into a status symbol and a fashion statement. It is more prevalent now than it ever has been. Black and white is the common style for Palestinian keffiyeh with tassels. White and red is most common for Saudi Arabian scarves and every other color is common everywhere else. These scarves can be worn by men and women alike, however, they are more commonly adorned by Arab men who wear traditional cultural clothing. Camo Desert scarves have also become a common item for soldiers stationed in the desert as it is a practical piece of camouflage.
